about

I had long been interested in experimental electronic music such as Musique Concrete. This album I experimented in ways to make music out of sounds, moving away from the use of scale, bars, chords of written music. Some of the tracks include samples of such things as 'toasters' and other objects that I recorded tapping into a microphone. Attempting to make musical instruments out of everyday objects. also wanted to hack existing instruments and use them in ways that they were not intended to be used. For example I removed the frets from a guitar and detuned it and recorded this on some of the tracks.

My live band the DüKrü is also featured on this album and I took my live recordings made on a portable minidisk recorder and then remixed them at home on my Fostex FD4. Overlaying clips from films etc. These live recordings were made in the Chapel bar in islington at a night called 'ego trip' (haha) organised by my friend Jahi Lake who I had met at SOAS where I was studying at the time, ethnomusicology and African Studies.

The band included Dan Stewart-Smith on bass (Root Source), Peetri (Finland) on guitar, Adrian Lawrence on drums and Jonathan on keyboards. At times at this jam session we also had guest appearances from other musicians.

One of the tracks 'Badger' is a remix of a piece that was inspired by the dry repetition of Steve Reich that I had made when I was 15. On this I overdubbed a melange of snippits from various tracks form my CD collection.

The album and track titles demonstrate my concern for the non-anthropocentric. The lives of non-humans, creatures of the forest.

Originally released as a cassette tape.

Included remixes of previous work.

Live and studio recordings of the DüKrü, with film footage from a South African film about apartheid over dubbed.

Tracks made using a sampler, Fostex FD /4/8, and fretless guitar to access microtones.
