about

Rise ALT is a piece that I made in honor of my father Mr.T, Austin Lycurgus Thomson born in 1920 and arrived in the UK from Jamaica in 1962.

I met my father when I was 27. It was an incredibly difficult process to find him. I had to overcome a huge amount of guilt, I felt for the people who raised me. It was a difficult barrier to cross. I am so grateful to my then girlfriend Aïssatou who helped me so much and was present when I found him.

I am also grateful of course to after adoption, a charitable organisation that no longer exists which was based in Manchester not far from where I was staying in Salford M3.

I remember clearly the day I got the call from after adoption and the lady on the telephone said that she had managed to trace my father and he had expressed that he would like to talk to me.

She gave me his number and she sent me all that she could find of my mother, this was a letter that my mother had written to me and delivered to social services.

I called my father for the first time and didn't understand much of what he was saying, he spoke in what seemed to me to be a thick Jamaican accent.

When I told him this he said very clearly to me, 'Just believe in God son, just believe in God'.

At that moment I felt very exited to meet him for the first time, he was 85.

The letter from my mother contained a telephone number. I tried this telephone number, the person on the end of the line informed me that my mother had passed away. I arranged to meet the person at the other end of the line in Bromsgrove. I was with Aïssatou, we searched the graveyard where they said my mother was buried, we could not find her grave. To this day I still do not know the circumstances of her death.

I saw my father on and off as much as I could but I always felt it was not enough, his advanced years meant I knew I had to make the most of him.

He finally passed at the age of 92, not far off from his 93rd birthday.
